Semana Santa Sawdust

The week before Easter Sunday is known as Semana Santa, or Holly Week. One of the many things that happen throughout the city (or for those who are still hanging around) is the making of the sawdust carpets and the processional that follows in which the carpets are purposefully destroyed. The girls and I got up extra early today to go check out what the carpet making was all about, we ran into some beautiful artwork... definitely worth the early morning call. This is what we saw as we walked down a main street in El Centro.

All of the colors were beautifully placed and the designs were so precise. Just watching people put their rugs together was exciting for me to see, hopefully one day I can do one too! And if not, at least bring the idea into the classroom, but put a spin on it somehow. Unfortunately we didn't stay to watch the processional, we were pretty exhausted still from the late night and full day of travel back from Trujillo, but maybe next year I'll get to experience the full effect of the Good Friday celebrations.
